ALERT!!! If you are reading this and it is still Monday, go log into your challenger NOW and take off your gear. Blizzard has converted white/grey items to greens in the past. If you are flagged for these, they will not be fixed.

Blizzard has finally confirmed Patch 7.3.5 will be released tomorrow, January 16th 2018. This patch is going to be especially meaningful to challengers of all shapes and forms as it introduces mob level scaling to ALL World of Warcraft content. The leveling paths that you have become used to for your challenge characters are invariably going to change.

Mobs will scale to your level and have up to 4 times (sometimes more) as much health as they previously did. A mob will “scale up” to your level once you’ve passed 50% mark of XP needed for your level. For example, you character at Level 20.25 (25% of xp needed to get to the next level) will be fighting mobs that are scaled to Level 19, once you hit 20.5 that mob will then scale up to be Level 20.

The levels of zones still have minimums: for example, Storm Peaks, despite being in Northrend (60-80), the zone will have a minimum level of 67, so you can’t just go running up in Storm Peaks at 60 (You’re gonna have a bad time).

A full list of zones with their new level ranges can be found here: https://www.wowhead.com/news=277409/7-3-5-ptr-new-zone-and-dungeon-scaling-levels. Here’s a brief summary of each continent / expansion and their new level range:

Starting Zones: 1 – 10
Classic Zones: 10 – 60
Outland & Northrend: 60 – 80
Pandaria & Cataclysm Zones: 80 – 90
Draenor: 90 – 100

FLYING IS CHEAPER! Well, not exactly, but you don’t have to pay for “extra” flying for content any longer. The “Old World Flying” and special flying skills required for flying in Northrend and Pandaria are no longer required. Once you buy your flying at Level 60, you are all set!  The extra flight SPEED skills at Level 70 and 80 are still in the game and will still cost you a good amount of gold.

Level Capture
When Legion introduced forced specializations, we captured (and displayed) the level your challenger was prior to the patch. With Patch 7.3.5 introducing zone level scaling for all non-Legion zones, we are going to once again be capturing what level you were on Monday night (US) and Tuesday night (EU). We will be removing the extra information from being displayed as we’re looking at reducing our real estate on the site.

A hardy grats to CaptainTrips, his toon Camachojr, a NE Hunter just dinged 110. He started the toon towards the end of November, and 50 days later maxed it with a played time of 7 days and 16 hours.

When asked what the hardest part was to getting a toon to 110, CaptainTrips said “Was trying to stay alive despite Bliz trying to kill me.” As an example, he said he was DCed 3-4 times while in flight, with his toon falling to the ground when he logged back in. “By using carefully timed hunter disengage, I managed to survive the falls.” I pointed out that the Goblin Glider Kit is pretty handy too if he’s going to do that going forward. “Naw, I just avoid vehicle flying quests and minimum use of flight points.”

What next? His girlfriend asked him what was he going to do now, and his first thought was that Southpark episode where he exclaimed “Finally, I can now play the game!”

You can find CaptainTrips on WrA in the Alliance guild or hanging on the Discord chats.

We finally hit Episode 100! It’s been a wild ride and we can’t wait to see what happens for the next hundred. Leeta and Stone share their adventures in the challenges and read the State of the Challengers. We also play clips from our previous 99 episodes throughout the show. Once again, we have question time with Leeta and Stone where we read questions from the community.

Neverdied’s army continues to expand with the dinging of Iron #27 on the Iron Challenger’s list. His druid hit 110 today, making it the eighth toon of his to make max cap.

Started February 2016 and reaching max January 2018, it took 5 days and 10 hours of played time to get there. Plus he has 3 other mid-100’s in the queue he’s working on. When asked what’s next, he said he is curious how the upcoming 7.3.5 patch with XP squish and scaling will impact the iron challenge. I asked, hey, what’s the biggest issue with juggling so many toons? He said he keeps similar talents/spells on the same action key (like the oh-crap-key or healing) is the same on each toon, but he admits he often forgets what each toon has done what quests as he goes around to each.

Congratulations (again) Neverdied!

Last night we announced that elixirs provided for quests were no longer allowed for challengers, however, we didn’t say why. Please read carefully.

Originally, the challenge was set up to not allow elixirs at all, however, through some coding and quest checking, a method was created to allow elixirs for quests… sort of. The exception is contingent on the elixir being used and the quest being completed and turned in before logging out. When the elixir is used but the quest is not turned in, we don’t see why the elixir was used: your character gets flagged.

For a singular elixir quest, we can unflip the flag (provided you have logged back in and turned in the quest), however, we CLEARLY had it written in the rules (paraphrasing): Use elixirs at your own risk. If you are flagged we cannot unflip it. This still did not deter characters (not one; MANY) from using the elixir, getting flagged and then requesting a fix (incidentally this is why we don’t ignore deaths due to bugs or DC/lag even if there is video proof – we will get hammered with requests).

The fault lies with me (Stone) for unflipping flags in the first place, despite it saying we would not. This is going to stop.

So we are drawing the line here but overall it seems arbitrary, especially so if the rule is kept the same. Invariably, we will get “…but you fixed it for them with the problem / rule.” This is true. Why can I fix it yesterday but not today?  Nothing changed: the rule is still the same!

For zone & quest completionists, do not fret. While I am changing the rule, I am NOT changing the code. If you decide you REALLY want to chance things and use the elixir to do a quest, the code will still be in place to check for it. If you get flagged, that is completely on you: I will not fix it and will be pointing at the “No Elixirs” rule. Know that completing all quests is NOT required to achieve maximum level for any of the challenges.

The easiest thing to do was to keep the rule SIMPLE, something which we already started doing by disallowing green+ gear for shirts and tabards. Adding in warnings did not work (again, I am to blame for wanting to fix things for folks). Changing the rule to flat out say “No Elixirs” is as simple as we can get it and brings us back to the original rule.

Xortz kicks off our year, joining Leeta and Stone to share his 2017 Challenger Death List highlights. We talk about our January Leveling Contest, Patch 7.3.5 Speculation, the Iron Teams Challenge and the State of the Challengers! They also chat about their week with their challenge characters, answer community questions with a new “Question Time with Leeta and Stone” segment and talk about what “The Iron Elite” is.

As promised, after the Patreon debacle, we were going to look at how our financial support processes were handled and tweak things if needed. The goal is to allow you to financially support us, if you want, and allow us to easily manage that.

I always stumbled over the whole “$5 Supporter” list read on the show… it felt awkward for me to do. While there was nothing wrong with the term “Supporters” (in fact, that’s what you all are), I kind of wanted something that sounded more cool. After some brainstorming (there were many, MANY names) with Leeta, we finally settled on “The Iron Elite”. Why Iron when we have more than just the Iron Challenge? The Ironman Challenge is THE reason why we are here today: all challenges are derivatives from Iron (in fact, the Iron challenge accounts for 90% of all characters).

We are also going to be doing away with the $5 read-your-name-on-the-show part. Instead, we’re going to be reading the names of ALL The Iron Elite, regardless of how much you have donated to us.

The “tier” system was driven from options available to us in Patreon but, in hindsight, it didn’t feel good to me. We will be keeping Patreon as some of our Iron Elite prefer it over other methods. We won’t be using Patreon nearly as much as we did before; since we have only “1 tier”, all Iron Elite communication will be happening primarily through #the-iron-elite channel in discord or email. I am personally still cautious over Patreon now and will be keeping an eye on any changes that could adversely affect both you and I.

Current Patreon Users: I deleted the $5+ tier in favour of the single $1+ tier. I mistakenly thought you’d be automatically moved down to the only existing tier, however, that did not happen. You’ll need to log into Patreon and select the $1 tier REWARD and connect your discord account so you get access to the appropriate channels.

The Iron Elite Updated List
I have updated The Iron Elite list to reflect current subscribers through PayPal, Twitch and Patreon.  I’ve gone through our discord member list last night and assigned “The Iron Elite” role to all users that I could find from the current list. If you do not have access to The Iron Elite channels (both text and voice) in discord, please reach out to a moderator or Stone and we’ll help you out as soon as we can. Things may not be working 100% yet, please reach out to me if you don’t have the access you should or your name isn’t showing up on The Iron Elite list when it should be.

Donation Avenues
It was important for us to figure out the best way to allow you to financially contribute to the site without having it be a major focus for us. We truly appreciate the support, however, we do want to keep focused on doing what we do best: Community, the Site, and our Podcast. Ignoring $$ values helps greatly as the only thing we really will be tracking are the one-time PayPal donations. I want to let you all know what avenues we have and how the $$ values work out; some are okay, some are not.

PayPal Subscription: I added this method to provide an alternative to Patreon’s changed model. You should not be paying any fees on this and you can choose a set $ value (in Canadian funds) for how much you want to donate each month. I pay the fees for each payment and they are fairly negligible. The payment goes to HockeySim.ca (this is the name of the account I use to handle payments from that site – I’m not creating a second PayPal account). I receive email notifications so addition to The Iron Elite list is dependent on when I have access to my PC.

PayPal One-Time Donations: Again, this shows that it’s going to HockeySim.ca (but that’s okay, it’s me). By default, this is in Canadian funds. Again, you should not be paying any fees. Fees on my side are fairly negligible. For folks donating as a one-time payment, you will be in The Iron Elite for 12 months from the most recent donation date. The minimum donation value is $1 CAD. I receive email notifications so addition to The Iron Elite list is dependent on when I have access to my PC.

Twitch – Subscribers: While we’re trying to use Twitch more and more, the model they use is not so good for us. We get only 50% of your subscription $$, however, we do get 100% of any bits you cheer us with. We do not have an easy method to track bit cheering; so cheering would typically not get you The Iron Elite access on discord. Twitch dollar values are in USD. We do have different emotes set up for each sub tier (you can use these in discord chat as well) but overall, there is no reward difference between $4.99 and $24.99. I do NOT receive subscription email notifications, so generally I will be looking at the list once a week. If you want your name up sooner, please reach out to me with your twitch name, twitter name, discord name, etc.

Patreon: $$ values are in USD. Fees are paid by us and are fairly negligible, however, we’ll continue to monitor what Patreon decides to do with their payment model. We have only one tier now. You can connect your discord account to Patreon in order to automatically gain access to the reward channels. If you were a $5+ tier member, you’ll need to log back in and select the $1 tier so that you have access to the discord reward channels. As a heads up, we are keeping this only because it’s a preferred method for some of our Iron Elite, however, we may shut this avenue down depending on how they handle any future model changes.

Accompanied by some of our listeners, Leeta and Stone finish the year off by reading their Challenger Death Lists. Thank you to Margothon, Rogueslayer, Ster, Nisey and Asyluun for calling in and sharing their death lists with us. We talk about Winter Veil, Iron Teams progress and a brief warning about the Antorus raid (not that you could really go in there anyway!) They also chat about their week with their challenge characters, run down this week’s State of the Challengers and respond to community questions.

We made it through another year… or did we? The Feast of Winter Veil has arrived once again and will run from December 16 2017 to January 2 2018. You can find the full write-up from wowhead.com here: https://www.wowhead.com/feast-of-winter-veil-guide.

Quests
There are a number of daily quests that you’re allowed to do. Even the daily requiring you to loot the bag that drops after killing the Greench is okay. You can stand back and let others kill it as all you need to do is grab the bag… you do not need to tag the Greench. Please be warned though… a death is still a death and I’ve heard the Greench will one-shot Irons without a second thought.

Blood Thirsty: Sorry, as usual you feel the wrath of the Greench: all quests count against you.

Pacifists: We recommend you try quests out on a regular character and see if your Kills and Killing Blows get incremented.

Gear
There are many pieces of cosmetic gear that are obtainable: please be aware that any green or higher quality item equipped is not allowed. Yes, this includes the shirt and tabard slots. White-quality items are still okay but you should take care as some white-quality items have turned green (this will flag you).

Blood Thirsty: HUZZAH! Green cosmetic gear is okay for you! Merry Winter Veil!

Pacifists: It is okay for you to craft cosmetic items for auction house sales.

Toys
You are allowed to collect and use all the toys, however, you should be aware that equipping green. blue or purple items will still red-flag you.

Food
There is quite a bit of food available, so I’ll only list the items that stand out as NOT ALLOWED.

The Snowglobe, Mistletoe, Fresh Holly and Handful of Snowflakes
All these should be okay to use. We’re not aware of any buff that would normally flag your challenger. As always, if you’re not sure, do some testing on a regular character before using items on your challenger. Flags will not be reversed.

Catching Greatfather Winter
This is an allowed activity on all challengers and will award you 500 Class Order Hall resources. It is not yet clear whether this will count as a quest for Blood Thirsty challengers, so be cautious.

Warlords Savage Gift
As we just mentioned the Savage Gift might contain the Minion of Grumpus mount. It also contains Apexis Crystals, Oil, Garrison Resources, Frozen Arms of a Hero, Elixir of the Rapid Mind, Medallion of the Legion.

  • The Frozen Arms of a Hero is okay to use on your followers.
  • The Elixir of the Rapid Mind is NOT ALLOWED to be used for your Challenge characters. You are, however, allowed to auction it or send it to another non-Challenge character for faster leveling.
  • The Medallion of the Legion this is an item that grants you reputation. While you can unlock reps, the items that become available may not fall within the challenge rules.

Presents!!!!
And we all know what we want for Winter Veil?? It’s the PRESENTS!!! Yes, you are allowed to open all the gifts from Greatfather Winter’s tree for your character. The gifts are available from December 25 through January 2. Please beware of the following items, as they are NOT ALLOWED for your Challenger.

As always, if you’re not sure or think the information here needs updating, please let me know. You can reach me on Twitter, the forums or by email.

Hi everyone,

For most folks reading this, you probably won’t care or worry about what we’re going to write about. Sorry about that, eh (I’m Canadian), I’ll try and make this short and sweet. For folks that currently support us financially (or want to) you might find this interesting (or not, I dunno… I’m not a pro writer).

Patreon has told us they are not rolling out the new fee changes. This is good. It doesn’t mean there won’t be changes forthcoming, though, as they have challenges to overcome.

For us, it means I won’t discontinuing our Patreon service; not right away, anyway. I set my own deadline of Dec.17 (day before the changes were going to roll out), if they did not change, then we’d pull the plug on Patreon.

So, Patreon absolutely does not make or break WoW Challenges, however, it most certainly helped and was far more trusted. It was a convenient way to incorporate some cool hooks into discord and had only a minimal amount of maintenance. We lost ~50% of our Patreon support (I am completely good with sending Patreon a message – I did it too) and some of you were gracious enough to find alternative means to continue to support us financially. Thank you so much!

We will be holding out final podcast of the year this Saturday. After that I’ll be looking at “financial support” as a whole and seeing where Patreon fits into that. The trust has most certainly been broken, however, overall, I feel like our current setup without Patreon will require a lot of maintenance. I’ll be looking to see if we can keep Patreon as a “lesser used” platform for folks that want to support that way (again, we’ll see what changes they decide to actually roll out with) and see if I can figure out an “easy to use” maintenance system to keep up with all of your help and ensure you get recognition (if you want it).

I know some folks don’t care about recognition, but it’s important to me that if we’re going to accept financial support we provide SOME KIND of recognition; over the next 2-3 weeks I’ll have more news on what changes (if any) are made.

I really appreciate all the support you’ve shown to the WoW Challenges community, whether it has been through dollars, retweeting, chatting with us during our shows or streams or just generally being a good person in Discord. It really means a lot.

Thank you!

Stone
